ChatGPT is NOT reliable for:
Use ChatGPT to understand the landscape, then use 211.org or your agency's resource directory to verify current availability.
The key to useful resource research with ChatGPT is describing the client's situation and needs without identifying information.
Example of what to type:
What types of community resources are available for a single mother with two children under 8 who needs: (1) emergency rental assistance to avoid eviction, (2) mental health counseling for the mother (she has Medicaid), (3) after-school childcare. For each resource type, describe what the program typically offers, common eligibility requirements, and what to look for when making a referral.
ChatGPT will describe the types of programs available: emergency rental assistance funds, community action agencies, mental health services with Medicaid, childcare subsidies, after-school programs, etc. It will explain what each type typically covers and who qualifies.
What you should see: A structured breakdown of 3-6 resource types per need, with brief descriptions of each.

Take what you've learned from ChatGPT and apply it when searching 211 or your agency's directory:
In your case notes, document that you researched resources and the results. You can paste your ChatGPT conversation summary into your notes, but remember to edit out any agency-specific framing that might reveal this was AI-assisted (agencies vary on their policies here).
Mental health referral: "What types of mental health services are available for adults with Medicaid who have a history of trauma? What should I ask providers when making a referral for a client who has had bad experiences with treatment before?"
Substance use resources: "A client has agreed to seek help for alcohol use disorder. What types of treatment options typically exist, from least to most intensive? What are eligibility and insurance considerations for each?"
Housing assistance: "What types of housing assistance programs exist for families with children who are currently housed but unstable? Include both emergency and transitional options."
Foster parent recruitment: "What community resources exist to help a new foster family with the needs of a child coming from a traumatic background? Include respite care, support groups, and therapeutic resources."
